What appointments are available?
Our appointments are typically Monday – Thursday from 9-4, except Holidays and Superior Court as our staff also serve as detention officers. When you are completing your application, you will select an available appointment.
How long does it take to process my application?
It can take up to 45 days or more to process applications. We have to get the mental background checks back before we can finish processing your application.
I don’t have a printer, how can I print out my application?
We will print your application packet for you!
I am renewing my permit, but I don’t have my certificate that it tells me to bring. What do I need to do?
Don’t worry about it! We should have it on file already as long as it is a renewal!
I have been discharged from the military, do I need any documentation?
Yes! You will need to bring a copy of DD-214 with you to your appointment.
If I am approved, where can I pick up my permit?
You may pick up your permit at the jail, located in the basement of the courthouse. They are there 24/7. Therefore, they can be picked up at anytime.
I received a letter for my renewal, when can I apply?
You can renew your permit within 60 days of the permit’s expiration date.
My permit has expired. Can I renew it anyway?
If your permit has expired, you have 60 days to apply You MUST apply for a new permit and pay the new permit fee. If you do not know your certificate number, just enter in a generic number as we should have your last application and certificate on file. If it is more than 60 days past the expiration date, you will need to complete a new NC Firearms Safety Course.
My permit expires tomorrow! Can I still renew it?
Yes, you can still renew as long as you apply BEFORE the expiration date! Your application will be processed the same as any other application. We cannot expedite the your permit.
I don’t have a computer. Can I come to the office to apply?
Walk-ins are welcome on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
I just moved here and need to renew my permit. Can I renew it in this county?
You can renew it in this county, but you MUST notify the county where you moved from to change the address. We CANNOT change your address from another county. Most counties require this to be done in person. Your identification must reflect the new Jones County address before you apply.
I just moved here from out of state, can I renew my permit with you?
No, North Carolina recognizes out of state permits, but does NOT renew them! You MUST complete a NC Firearms Safety Course and apply for a new permit.
Where can I find a NC Firearms Safety Class?
You can check with a local gun dealer, go to Facebook, or check online for classes.
Why am I being charged a processing fee?
This fee is not collected by the Sheriff’s Office. This fee goes to Permitium to cover the cost of supplying this service for the Sheriff’s Office at no cost to us!
I took a concealed weapons class online. Can I apply for a permit through you?
No! North Carolina ONLY accepts certificates from an NC Firearms Safety Course! This course is NOT available online!
