Gun Permits

The NC General Statute 14-404, requires the Sheriff’s Office to process the handgun purchase permit within 14 days of the application. (However, due to the increase in gun permit applications and limited staff, it can take longer than 14 days.)

Please note that as part of the application process, you will authorize the Jones County Clerk of Superior Court to inform the Sheriff of Jones County whether or not the clerks’ records contain the record of any involuntary mental commitment proceeding under Article 5 of Chapter 122C of the General Statutes in which you have been named as a respondent. The purpose of this release is to enable the Sheriff to determine your qualification and competence to purchase and handle a handgun.

The Jones County Sheriff’s office offers this online service as a convenience to the community. In addition to the per permit fee of $5, the system will charge a per transaction fee for the convenience of applying and paying for your permits online. The convenience fee is not collected by the Sheriff. This fee is paid to the company that provides this service, payment and processing system to the public.

Walk-in hours are typically Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  However, due to our very limited number of employees please call ahead of arrival to ensure that we do have a staff member available.

Once you have been contacted that your permit has been approved, please wait at least 24 hours. You will pick up your permit at the jail, located in the basement of the courthouse. Make sure you bring a photo ID.

Retired or discharged military personnel MUST bring in a copy of their DD-214.

***Military personnel will also be required to produce verification of their residence in Jones County if their drivers license does not show a Jones County address.
